Sandboxing: Excavation

by OctoDeath

Of all the maps on Sandbox I've seen posted, this map may be the one that makes me want the Mythic map pack the most. Excavation is a remake of Foundation constructed on the middle level of Sandbox, and from the rooms I held off Zombies from to the turrets I used in Team Duals back in the day (so cheap), it looks perfect. My frothing demand for Sandbox increases.

Matchmaking Map: Flux

The Matchmaking Map series is where I post Halo 3 user-created maps that I think deserve a chance to be implemented into the game's matchmaking; note that all of the maps are not necessarily 100% perfect, but definitely are 100% awesome. First up is Flux. This Foundry variant is the matchmaking version of the map "Xyience," which was originally designed for MLG gametypes by NeXn. Afterwards, him, Ivory, and Zonked set out to create it in Forge on Foundry. It was later submitted with a few tweaks for regular play to Bungie's Atlas group with its new title. Flux is smooth, sleek, and forged to perfection.

Flux was inspired by the Halo 1 map Damnation. Like its predecessor, it is asymmetrical and multi-tiered; the map has 4 different levels, which is very difficult to forge considering the restrictions of Foundry's soft ceiling. Many of its parts are reminiscent of Damnation; it has many ramps, bridges, and platforms, and a teleporter leading to a suspended catwalk, an ideal vantage point for snipers. The aspects of the map inspired by this Halo 1 classic bring an old-school style of gameplay to the new kid on the block.

Additionally, the weapon load-out on Flux is very similar to its Halo 1 counterpart; there is an overshield, rocket launcher, and a sniper rifle spread throughout the map. One thing the creators of Flux did particularly well was place these power weapons; they are located in spots where they can be contested and where they won't instantly be effective. The rocket launcher is placed in the basement of the map, so that a player can't instantly rain death from above, and the overshield is housed in an open area on the floor, a fair distance from the nearest power position.

The reason in my opinion Flux is such a great map is that is sectioned-off well without being too compartmentalized. One side of the map is clearly split apart from the other, and on each side the lines of sight are blocked with pillars and bridges. But these sections are not distinctly separate from each other, like on The Pit, where narrow hallways, a dangerous trench, and a cramped bridge connect its sides. On Flux, are a multitude of passages and the overlooking catwalk to meld the two parts together. This and the fact that the map is asymmetrical makes the map's gameplay very unique.

Playlist and gametype suggestions for Flux:

Playlist Gametype
Team Slayer - Team Slayer
Team Swat - Team SWAT
Team Objective - One Flag, One Bomb, King of the Hill, Land Grab*
Multi-Team - King of the Hill, Land Grab
Squad Battle* - One Flag, One Bomb

*Halo 2 style of Territories, also called 3 Plots
*Might be too small for Squad Battle

Hi

This is a blog where I post about Halo 3. I'll be putting anything I feel like related to Halo on this blog, like posting an awesome screenshot or map that I found, writing about my ideas for improving Halo 3 matchmaking in too many words, posting about MLG, or anything I feel like.

Some posts I'll probably be making semi-regular are:

Matchmaking Map: maps I think could be in matchmaking

(Playlist) Addition: (Gametype): a gametype I think should be added to a playlist

(Playlist) Subtraction: (Gametype): a gametype that's terrible and needs to be removed from a playlist

I'll probably think of more of these. No one's reading this blog except me anyways.
